Freedmen's Town Association

"Rebuilding the Community One Brick at a Time."

The Beginning
Freedmen's Town was established in 1865 by newly emancipated slaves who purchased land and created a vibrant community. We have fought for years to preserve the community's heritage by fighting to maintain the bricks in the streets of the historical Fourth Ward, educating others about our history, and giving back to the community.
The Now
Here at Freedmen's Town Association, we see the value in everyone. We have been a catalyst for positive change, and since our beginnings in 1865, we’ve been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our Non-Profit Organization upon: support, empowerment, and progress. Dealing with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. Freedmen's Town Association emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words.
